Learn How To Paint a Room

Painting a room is easy but takes time and careful attention. Protect your floor and furniture from paint drips with plastic or tarps. Tape along the floor right where it meets the wall.

Planning Your Painting Project

  • Pick your paint. You can get paint chips at the hardware store or paint store to help you decide on a color. You can also go to the website of the paint company to see what colors they offer. Some stores will mix paint colors for you to make the special color you want for your room.
  • Prepare the wall before you paint a room. Patch any holes in the wall. Then move all the furniture in the center of the room and cover with plastic. Use wide masking tape to tape the all around the floor where it meets the wall.
  • Load the brush. When you load your paintbrush, try to get as much paint on it without dripping. Before you dip the brush into the paint for the first time, wet it with water. Then shake some of the water off by tapping the metal part of the brush against the edge of a sink. The first time you dip the brush in the paint, move it around inside the paint can.
  • Get a grip. Hold the brush handle with the entire hand, as you would hold a tennis racket. This technique works best when you're painting large, flat surfaces. If you are using a smaller brush to get into tight corners or to paint intersections, hold it just like a pencil. This will give you control for details.
  • Cut in - then roll. Start by holding the paint brush like a pencil and paint the wall wherever it intersects with another wall, baseboard or frame. Paint all the way along each intersection. Next, use a roller to fill in the large blank areas of wall.
