How To Find Affordable Housing
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recommends that you should pay no more than 30 percent of your income on housing. (Use the Beehive’s Rent and Mortgage Calculator to find out how much you should be spending.)
If you can’t afford the apartments you find in newspapers or online, there are programs and websites that can help you.
Public Housing
HUD’s Public Housing program offers affordable apartments for low-income families, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Visit HUD’s website to learn more about the eligibility requirements and application process.
Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8)
Through this program, you can find your own place and use a voucher to pay for part or all of the rent. Contact the Public Housing Agency in your city and state for more information and to learn how to apply.
