Paying For School

The cost of going to school is what keeps many people away, but there are many ways you can get help paying for school.

Free or Low-Cost Programs

English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE) and GED programs are usually free. Some training programs are free if they're offered by community-based organizations.

Programs That Require Financial Aid

College and some training programs cost money. For most people, paying for school is their biggest problem. Most education and training providers can help you pay for school with financial aid.

Applying for financial aid can take a long time, but it's worth the effort. There are many different types of financial aid:

  • Grants - Grants usually come from the state or federal government and don't have to be repaid.
  • Loans - School loans are offered through the school with low interest rates and flexible repayment plans. You usually don’t have to repay a loan while you're still in school – repayment starts about six months after you leave school or if you're in school part-time. You must repay your loan whether or not you finish your degree.
  • Work-Study Programs - Work-study jobs are reserved for students who qualify based on their financial need. If you don't qualify for a work-study job, you can get help finding a part-time job from the career services department at your school.

You can get more information about Federal financial aid from the U.S. Department of Education.

Complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online. Students must complete a FAFSA to apply for Federal student financial aid and for many state student aid programs.
