Read the Employee Manual - Make sure you know your company’s policies

Now that you’ve landed that new job it’s important to start off on the right foot. While some companies may not have an employee manual most do. It’s important to read through the manual because it will give you a good idea of what the company expects of you and what you should expect of the company.

If you didn’t receive an employee manual on your first day, ask your human resources person or your boss if the company has one that you can review!

Policies Typically Found In an Employee Manual   Other information that may be found in an employee manual  
  • Dress code
  • Attendance
  • Safety
  • Drugs and alcohol
  • Legal policies including sexual harassment
  • Company holidays
  • Vacation, sick and personal days
  • Discipline
  • Overtime
  • Company history
  • Parking and transportation guidelines
  • Specific guidelines relating to shifts (i.e. certain employees may be expected to start at different times)
  • Information on benefits
  • Some companies will also have a page at the end you have to sign and turn in that acknowledges you have received the employee manual
