North Carolina Unemployment Insurance Program

If you lose your job, you may be eligible for temporary payments through the unemployment insurance program. The North Carolina Employment Security Commission handles the unemployment insurance program.

You are eligible if you:
  • Lost your job through no fault of your own,
  • Worked during a specified time period and received a minimum amount of wages during that time period,
  • Are able and available for work, AND
  • Are actively seeking new employment.

The amount of unemployment insurance you receive is based on your wages in jobs covered by the Employment Security Law.

Employers pay all benefits and administrative costs through State Unemployment Tax Act and Federal Unemployment Tax Act payments. No money is taken from your pay check for unemployment benefits.

Please visit ESC Office Locator to find a local office of the Employment Security Commission.
