Who is eligible to take the GED test?

You may take the GED test if:

• You are not currently in high school, and
• You have not graduated from high school, and
• You are at least age 16-years-old, and
• You meet your state's rules for age, where you live, and how long it's been since you left high school. Each state has different rules for who can take the GED. Call 1 (800) 626-9433 (toll free) to find a testing center in your area. Your local testing center can tell you for sure if you are eligible to take the test.
   

Why do I need a GED?

It is very hard to get a job without a high school diploma or a GED. You also can't get into college or most vocational schools without a high school diploma or GED. People who have a GED or high school diploma make more money than those who don't. 

Will the GED help me get into college?

Most colleges accept GED graduates just like high school graduates. If you have your GED you can usually get federal financial aid to pay for college. After earning your GED, you will need to take either the ACT and/or the SAT, depending on what the colleges you want to go to require. Some colleges may also require you to take some more tests to see if you need to take any other courses to get ready for college (such as a review of high school math). 

What kind of score do I need to pass the exam?

The standard scores for the GED tests range from a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 800 on each section of the test. To pass, an overal score of 60% is required. The score for any single test cannot be below 410 and you must have an overall average score of at least 450 for the five individual sections of the exam.

Is the GED test available in other languages?
