AmeriCorps is a work-based program that provides education money to individuals who successfully complete a term of service. There are three branches of this program: AmeriCorps State and National, AmeriCorps VISTA, and AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC). Learn more about each below:

Who is eligible for this program: U.S. citizens or permanent residents ages 17 and up who are qualified to do the required work
Term of service: Part-time and full-time positions are available for terms of 9 months to 1 year.
Pay and other benefits: Hirees, or “Americorps members,” receive a modest wage, on-the-job training, minimal health insurance, and child care assistance during their term of service. When they successfully complete their term of service, they may choose between receiving an education award or a lesser cash award. The maximum education award is currently $4,725, which may be used to pay off student loans or to pay for future education (college, vocational school, or graduate school). Individuals who do not opt to receive an education award receive a lesser cash award (currently equal to $100 for every month of full-time work completed).

Term of service: full-time for one year

Who is eligible for hire under this program: 18-24 year old U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are qualified to complete the required work
Term of service: 10 months
Pay and other benefits: Team members are provided housing in one of five campuses located in Denver, Colorado; Sacramento, California; Perry Point, Maryland; Vicksburg, MS; and Vinton, Iowa. They are paid a modest wage to work on various active projects in teams of 10 to 12 people. When they successfully complete their term of service, they may choose between receiving an education award or a lesser cash award. The maximum education award is currently $4,725, which may be used to pay off student loans or to pay for future education (college, vocational school, or graduate school). Individuals who do not opt to receive an education award receive a lesser cash award (currently equal to $100 for every month of full-time work completed).
