Four Key Tips for Online College Scholarship Searching

Computer search button

College scholarships come in all shapes and sizes, but getting your hands on the right ones can be tricky. This article will provide you with four key tips to get the most out of your online college scholarship research.

  1. Be Specific. One of the first things you might notice as you begin your research is simply the huge number of scholarships which are available. This is to your benefit, but it can quickly become overwhelming if you don't narrow your search. Many scholarships are relevant to specific majors, geographic locations and even schools, so it helps to have this information on hand as you begin searching. For example, "University of Baltimore business scholarships" is generally a better search term than simply "college financial aid." Being as detailed as possible is also a good strategy because it allows you to backtrack if you're having trouble locating a specific type of scholarship. If you're unsure of what your major will be or which school you would like to attend, there are always more general scholarships available out there for you.
  2. Get Creative with your Searches. Did you know that many large companies offer financial aid for students wishing to go to college? You can find a wide range of scholarships by visiting the corporate websites of businesses like these. Many clubs and organizations sponsor similar opportunities as well. Scholarships can present themselves in a variety of different forms so don't limit yourself. These include: work-study programs, grants, forgivable loans, fellowships, and even book vouchers. So when searching for scholarships on the web, try to look beyond the traditional sources of financial aid which are usually available. This way you will increase the scope of your research and find opportunities you never before knew existed.
  3. Make Note of any Deadlines or Requirements. Anytime you come across a scholarship that you think may be a good fit always be sure to make note of any associated deadlines or requirements. There's nothing worse than getting halfway through a scholarship application only to realize that you either don't qualify, or the deadline has passed. Most college scholarships have cut-off dates for the acceptance of materials because they want to ensure that all of your financial aid is in place by the start of the next school semester, so it is critical that you begin your research early. For example, if the scholarship requires an essay or letters of recommendation, make sure you leave yourself enough time to get all of these submission materials together before the due date.
  4. Don't Get Frustrated. If you find that you're not having much luck finding the scholarship opportunities that are available to you, don't get frustrated. Take a break, think up a new approach, and come back later. If you're having trouble finding the type of scholarship that you need, don't give up. Just as there is a wide variety of scholarships out there, there are also plenty of resources available to help you locate them. You can also talk to your local librarian, or contact the financial aid office at your school for more information.
