Federal grants are awards of money from the government. There are several Federal grants: 

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG)

Eligibility
A student may be eligible if they:
  • Have “exceptional financial need”
  • Have a certain grade point average
  • Are a U.S. citizen
Value
A student may be awarded $100-$4,000 per year depending on financial need, what other awards they’ve received, and what funds are available at their school.
 
Money can be used for:
Tuition and related fees

Pell Grants  

Eligibility
A student may be eligible for a Pell grant if:
  • They are getting an undergraduate degree at an eligible college
  • They are a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen
  • They have filled out the FAFSA and have demonstrated financial need
Value
$400-$4000 per year, depending on need.
 
Money can be used for:
  • Tuition and related fees
  • Sometimes books and other expenses

If a student receives a Pell grant, they may also be eligible for the following additional grants:

ACG   National SMART grant   TEACH grant

About ACGs, or Academic Competitiveness Grants:

Eligibility
A student may be eligible if:
  • They are a full-time first or second year undergraduate student
  • They have received a Pell Grant
  • They are a U.S. citizen
  • They have at least a 3.0 grade point average (if they’re a sophomore)
  • They participated in a strong high school academic program (if they will be a freshman)
Value
$750 for the first year, $1,300 for the second year
 
Money can be used for:
Tuition and related fees

About National SMART (Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent) grants:

Eligibility
A student may be eligible if:
  • They are a U.S. Citizen
  • They got a Pell Grant
  • They are a full time student in their third or fourth year of an undergraduate program
  • Have at least a 3.0 grade point average
  • They are majoring in:
    • Physical science
    • Life sciences
    • Computer sciences
    • Mathematics
    • Technology
    • Engineering
    • Foreign language critical to national security
Value
Up to $4,000 per year
 
How to apply

 

About TEACH (Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education) grants:

Eligibility
A student may be eligible if:
  • They plan to teach in a school that serves low-income families
  • They’re a U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen
  • Their school participates in the TEACH grant program.
  • They’re enrolled in, or plan to enroll in, courses necessary to begin a career in teaching
  • They score above the 75th percentile on a college admissions test OR maintain a GPA of 3.25 or higher
  • They sign the TEACH grant agreement to serve
Value
Up to $4,000 per year.
