Post 9/11 GI Bill

This Post 9/11 GI Bill provides financial support for education and housing to those who have served at least 90 days of service on or after September 11, 2001 or individuals discharged with a service-related disability after 30 days. If a student is eligible for MGIB or REAP benefits as well, they must choose whether or not they want benefits under those programs or this one.

Answers to common questions:

Eligibility   Value   How to use the money   How to apply

A student may be eligible for this benefit if:

  • They served at least 90 days of active duty after September 10, 2001
  • They are still on active duty or were honorably discharged

A student could get anywhere from 40% to 100% of their education expenses, depending on where they live, what type of education or training they want and the length of their service. How much they get will not be greater than the cost of tuition and fees at the most expensive public undergraduate university in their state.

Money can be used for:

  • Tuition and fees for:
    • An undergraduate or graduate degree
    • Vocational or technical training
    • Tutorial help
    • Licensing and certification test reimbursement
    • Some on-the-job training or apprentice programs
  • In some cases, a monthly housing allowance
  • Books and supplies up to $1000 per year
  • A one-time relocation fee for eligible veterans living in rural areas

A student may:

  • Apply online
  • Call 1 (888) GI BILL-1 (1 (888) 442-4551) (toll-free) to have a form mailed to them
  • Get an application from the financial aid or registrar's office at the school or training establishment they wish to attend
