Six Reasons Why You Should Go to College

Two young men in a college class.

Young people are often told they should go to college after leaving high school, but aren't told why they should go. You do have other options to consider. However, here are six reasons why a college education is a good choice:

  1. Increased Job Opportunity: Having a college degree under your belt makes you more attractive to employers. Let’s say you want to be a newspaper reporter. An employer is more likely to call a person who has a journalism or English degree from a university than someone who only graduated from high school. In today’s job market, most employers require more than a high school diploma.
  2. Better Salary: Statistically, people who graduate from college bring home more bacon than those who don’t. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2007, 25-year-old, full-time workers earned a median annual salary of $32,500 with a high school diploma compared with $53,000 with a bachelor’s degree. The more education you have, the greater potential you have to earn a good income.
  3. Life Experience: College is a wonderful place to learn important life skills such as time management, discipline, budgeting money and networking with people. These skills will prove valuable in the workplace and in your personal life.
  4. Networking: Whether you commute to a community college or go live on a university campus, you are bound to meet people from all walks of life. You’ll make lots of friends and form relationships with people who may prove helpful during your professional life. Your peers could become business partners or people to reach out to in the future.
  5. Fun: College is serious business, but you’re there to have a good time, too. Enjoy the social benefits of college. Take advantage of activities on campus or join an organization (such as, student government, a student newspaper or magazine or a cultural club). Take this as an opportunity to grow as a person.
  6. Sense of Accomplishment: Deciding to attend college means a sacrifice of your time and money. It means studying for exams, writing papers, working on projects and sitting in a few classes that don’t necessarily interest you. But once you walk across the stage and receive your degree at graduation, you will feel extremely proud that you were able to do it.
