STEM Early College High School lets students in Wake County earn a high school diploma and up to two years of college credit at the same time.
It is a five-year program sponsored by the Wake County Public School System, N.C. State University and the N.C. New Schools Project. Its first year will start in fall 2011 with a class of 50 ninth-grade students.
Students must be interested in science, technology, engineering, and/or math. Students who will be the first in their family to earn a college degree are encouraged to apply.
The program will be free of cost to students. Even when taking college classes, students will receive free tuition and books for classes.
The school will be near N.C. State University. Transportation will be available.
