Here are five tips on talking with your child’s teachers to make the most of your time with them.
- Recognize you and your child's teacher are partners. You are both invested in helping your child. Approach teachers professionally and build a relationship. Try to communicate with your child's teacher throughout the year.
- Start talking with your child's teacher early in the school year. It’s best if your first interaction with a teacher isn’t about a problem. Parents and teachers are usually frustrated by the time an issue has arisen.
- Focus on all aspects of your child. Sometimes parents or teachers get caught up in grades or test scores. Be sure to talk about what your child enjoys doing and learning. Teachers want to know how to engage their students. Use grades and test scores as a starting point for discussion.
- Learn who your child's teacher is. Teachers have different approaches and styles. Learn what your child's teacher is like and listen to his or her solutions.
- Ask how you can help. Look for ways that you can support what your child's teacher is doing in the classroom. Discuss your role and the teachers role in solving any problems.
