Tips to help get homework done

Set a specific time and place to study.
Help your child choose a specific time and place to complete assignments each day. Find a quiet, well-lit place without distractions for your child to complete homework assignments. For tips on choosing the best place to do homework, check out the Beehive’s article “Create a Great Homework Space.”

Use checklists to get organized.
Encourage your child to use a notebook to keep track of homework assignments. He or she can also number assignments in the order they should be finished. Once your child finishes each assignment, he or she should check it off the list to stay on track.

Talk with your child about homework.
Ask about what your child is working on at school. If you have time, offer to review homework with him or her. You can help your child correct assignments, but make sure that he or she understands each correction.

Extra step: If you can, encourage your child to think about how homework relates to everyday life. For example, you can review fractions and measurements while cooking a meal or practice sounding out words that appear on street signs and billboards.
